"BIRTHING & CARE OF THE NEONATAL ALPACA & LLAMA"

The objective of this course is to help you determine what role YOU play in the alpaca birthing process and give YOU more confidence in assisting with a difficult birth if necessary.

This neonatal seminar will be tailored to the needs of the attendees depending on knowledge levels; therefore, topics may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Learn reproductive physiology
  • Difficult births - Are you dealing with a dystocia?
  • Common dystocias & how to correct them.
  • Pregnancy diagnosis - progesterone tests & ultrasound
  • Post-partum care of the dam & cria
  • Post-partum care of the dam & cria.
  • Care of the cria - what is normal and how to deal with "at risk" crias
  • Preparation for birthing
  • What is normal birthing?
  • Birth Defects
Lab: You will be practicing dealing with dystocias using deceased alpaca crias. This lab is to help prepare you for dealing with a dystocia, provide practice delivery exercises and instruction on how to correct malpresentations

Biography: Patrick Long, DVM is a mixed animal practitioner residing in Corvallis, OR. Llamas and alpacas comprise more than half of his practice. He is a popular speaker at the national AOBA conferences (Alpaca Owners & Breeders Association), faculty member of the Alpaca Breeders Fiber School, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Alpaca Research Foundation. He spearheaded and co-authored the book, "Llama & Alpaca Neonatal Care". In addition, he has screened many alpacas in South America for exportation to other countries, including the USA

Registration deadline: Registration forms and payment are due no later than April 11, 2008. $175 per person or $325 for two from same farm/ranch. Includes all supplies, lunch, and handouts. Beverages and snacks will be provided during seminar. Class size is limited to 16 attendees to provide ample time in the lab.
